Biography

Audrey started studying art and art history under the guidance of Dr Joseph Paul Cassar. Later, she attended classes by the late artist Mr Charles Cassar who emphasised imaginative painting. Audrey also frequented live classes organized by Mr Anton Calleja. She later continued attending Mr Alfred Briffa’s live classes where she consolidated her design, especially in the human figure, portraiture, and good use of colour both in

pastels and oils. Audrey also joined Mr Winston Hassall’s watercolour classes covering various subjects. For a brief period, she attended Mr Angelo Agius’ studio making statues in clay. Audrey attended a sculpture course at the Malta School of Art with the late Mr Joseph Chetcuti and at the artist’s studio. She placed first in this sculpture class. Later she attended various courses in drawing, painting and sculpture at the Florence Academy with internationally renowned artists Jordan Sokol, Eran Webber, Vitaliy Shtanko, Jura Bedic and Simone Olivia Moritz. Mercieca also attended a course with artist Nicholas O’Leary at the Florence Academy Sweden Branch.

Audrey received “Gieh l-Ghasri” in 2018 for painting 15  “Bandalori” of the village feast. This project is still going on where the artist is painting the second set. Mercieca painted the paschal candle in 2022 and is presently painting another one for this year.

Audrey Mercieca believes that education in art is of optimal importance. Her experience in art yielded artistic growth and style. This explains the ability to experiment with different media and various subjects. It depends on her mood to pick up a medium and start bringing to life on paper, canvas or in clay what’s in her mind.

In Audrey’s painting one can see the good observation and understanding of the subject she is painting, yet her paintings are sensitive to her thought towards the subject painted. Looking at her paintings gives a sense of tranquillity.

Audrey is a member of the Malta Society of Arts & Pastel Society of Arts. She took part in various collective and solo exhibitions. Her works hang in private collections both in Malta and abroad.
